Google’s timing has always been somewhat peculiar, but rarely is it a mere coincidence. A day after Facebook launched its first location feature to over 125 million users, the search giant revealed in a blog post on Thursday that more than 100 million users check Google Maps from mobile devices.

Some of Google Map’s popular features, such as My Location, lets users track their position even on phones without GPS features, and Navigation, which adds voice guidance and street-side photographs to turn an ordinary cell phone into a complete navigation device. Latitude, the somewhat sidelined feature most in use today by Android users to share their location and track friends’ whereabouts, and Place Pages, which was added to the product last year to provide reviews and photos around each of its locations.

The latter two concepts combine for what is essentially the heart of Facebook Places. Latitude is what Places enables at its core – sharing your location and tracking your friends. Using location-based features on Facebook gets its utility in finding out whether your friends have visited in the past, what has been said about it, and who is checked in there now. After you check in, your update will appear on the Place's page, your friends' News Feed and also your Facebook wall. You'll also be able to see if any of your friends are at your current location, and you can browse the updates of your friends who are checked in at locations nearby.

Once updating your location from your mobile device on Facebook, there is not yet a way to turn off sending it to your newsfeed. Say you check in to a lot of places, but don’t want it to cover up your entire wall! This is one thing that will need to be changed for more people to use this product continuously. Also, what if someone is on their computer say at a coffee shop and wants to ‘check-in?’

Before Places, location-based services like foursquare and Gowalla were primarily used by early-adopters. In other words, about 500 million Facebook users just got thrown into the geo-location and will quickly realize how great LBS can be at connecting with friends, places, etc.

Quality Facebook fans are more likely to turn into future paying customers. To increase your Facebook numbers with fans who are genuinely interested in your business or organization, follow these quick social media marketing tips:

Encourage Your Email Subscribers to Join Your FB Fan Page - Send out an invitation to your email subscribers informing them about your new Facebook fan page. Make sure you give people a brief summarization of what your fan page is all about.

Embed Widgets on Your Blog or Website - There are several attractive-looking Facebook plugins for you to choose from such as the “like” button. You can now place a ‘like’ button on your blog or website. This will encourage more site visitors to join your fan page.

Often times, people will have a fan page with out-dated information. If you want people to join (and remain fans) you have to give them a reason to join. Youtube has just announced that they have extended their 10-minute video time maximum to 15-minutes. Finally, people can produce longer videos for viewers to watch. In the recent past, it was quite frustrating to watch a video with a 10-minute limit, especially when watching 45 or 60 minute presentation.

Experts say that the first 15-minutes of a video presentation are crucial. Youtube has finally realized that the 10-minute maximum wasn’t enough time. The 15-minute gives extra time to play with.

Before uploading your 15-min video presentations, follow these important tips:

  • Creating an effective video presentation takes good planning. If you are thinking about creating your own video presentation, make sure your presentation is polished. If you want to connect to your audience, your video has to be professional; otherwise viewers will get bored, go elsewhere or not watch the next video.

  • Invest in good editing software. There are a few good video editing programs available in the market to help make your video look and sound professional. Make sure you shop around before purchasing video editing software. Prices range from cheap to expensive.

  • Don’t just promote your video presentation on Youtube; promote your video on your website, blog and social media sites (Facebook, Ning, etc.).

  • Whether you’re an entrepreneur, an executive or a musician, if you want to increase your popularity on Youtube, you have to be willing to give your viewers well produced videos to watch.
